Top Reasons Why Getting a Fence in the Winter Is a Good Idea

by | Dec 19, 2023 | Fencing

Happy Holidays everyone! Today we are going to go over why winter is the best time to get the fence you’ve always wanted.

Firstly let’s define winter in terms of fencing contractors. The winter slowdown for semi-seasonal businesses begins around early November and lasts until early March. As far as our discussion today goes, this is how we will define winter.

Getting a Fence in the WinterThe area you are in also plays an important role in winter fence building. Draper Fence Company is located in Indianapolis, IN. If you are located much north of Central Indiana you may have to wait until Spring to get your fence. Simply put there are areas of the United States where winters are too harsh to build fences. In central Indiana, the weather is pretty mild until mid-January. While January and February can be very cold, the fact that Indiana only has a couple of really cold months per year means our frostline is never deeper than 24”. The frost line is how deep the earth freezes during winter.

The frozen ground is a big part of why some people think you can’t get a fence in the middle of the winter. Of course over a foot of frozen ground makes things more difficult. However, at Draper Fencing, we use hand tools to break up the ground a bit. Once broken up our machines can grip the earth to dig a perfect hole that is appropriately deep for your fence post.

The bitter cold of winter in some places can also negatively affect wood materials. Fences are built outside and a bitter cold will always have this effect. However, in Indiana, we are not likely to experience this very often which means your Cedar privacy fence will withstand the test of time regardless of when it is installed.

These facts make fencing a semi-seasonal business. While fencing slows down in the winter it does not stop altogether. Other businesses such as landscaping and lawn mowing have to shut down altogether during certain times but not fencing.

The semi-seasonal nature of fence building means that you can get your fence faster during the winter months as well. Most professional fence companies get booked up to about 8-12 weeks by the end of August. As the industry slows down we can catch back up on this backlog. By February you may be able to get your fence in as little as two weeks! The longer you wait into Spring and Summer the more difficult it is to get an express installation.

You may be wondering if building fences in winter is more difficult than how it is possible to get a great deal in the winter. The answer is twofold.

  • Building a Strong Team

Here at Draper Fencing, we place an emphasis on making fencing a career and taking care of our team. We take pride in keeping our team busy all year round. We don’t want our employees worried about Christmas gifts for their kids because their hours got cut over the winter. For us, it is acceptable to give out great discounts on a project to keep our valued team members busy.

  • Lack of Interest in Fenced during Winter Months

While Indiana may not experience extreme cold in the winter the temperature does drop and most of us enjoy hundling up indoors. The bottom line is that people aren’t thinking about their yards in the winter. Our brains are focused on Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas presents, not backyard BBQs. When people aren’t thinking of fences, fencing companies slow down. When companies slow down we must compete even harder to earn our business. Again this means awesome discounts during the winter months.

As fencing companies slow down, it affects our vendors too. Many fencing material companies, including aluminum fencing, offer discounts around the holidays. When our suppliers offer discounts it means we can pass savings onto our customers.

The bottom line is that winter is the best time to get a fence because it’s the time when the least amount of people are thinking about their outdoor projects. Draper Fencing Company can install fences at the exact same quality as during the warmer months. We are offering discounts right now so do not wait to schedule your free in-person estimate!
